Polpeor Cafe at Lizard Point – Britain’s Most Southerly Cafe in Cornwall

Before starting a new article I usually spend some time looking through the photos I took during that part of the trip.

I tend to choose a few pictures first and then rebuild my memories and descriptions around them.

When I started preparing this post about a place where I ate during my time in Cornwall, I looked not only at the food pictures but also at a few landscape photos taken nearby.

Those images helped me remember the day better.

It was sunny. Not just sunny — it was actually quite hot.

I remember sitting on the terrace in a T-shirt, relaxing after visiting Kynance Cove and shortly after admiring the dramatic scenery of Lizard Point.

And right there, at the edge of mainland Britain, lies the small place I want to talk about in this article.

Polpeor Cafe, proudly known as Britain’s most southerly cafe.

Truth be told, I did not have very high expectations before arriving here.

After parking my car at Lizard Point I started walking towards the cliffs, enjoying the scenery and the sound of the sea.

I spent some time exploring the area, taking photos and simply watching the waves.

Looking at the sea always relaxes me.

Eventually I realized it was well past noon and I had not eaten anything since breakfast.

Normally, when I am at home, I rarely eat breakfast. But while traveling I usually try to eat something early because I never know how much walking I will end up doing or how easy it will be to find a place to eat later.

The Terrace and the View at Lizard Point

One thing I learned during many of my trips is that research is essential when visiting large cities.

But when visiting small villages or coastal locations in places like Italy, Spain or even England, the chances of encountering truly bad food are usually lower.

Of course I still try to avoid very touristy restaurants when possible.

In the case of Polpeor Cafe though, it is the only place in the immediate area, which means it automatically becomes a tourist spot.

Still, hunger won.

So I sat down at an outside table and enjoyed the warm sun.

The terrace is fantastic. Everyone tries to get a seat near the edge because the view stretches far across the sea.

Despite the terrace being quite busy, the staff were extremely friendly.

They moved quickly between tables, always smiling and helping customers with suggestions from the menu.

I genuinely found the staff here to be excellent.

The Food – Crab Cakes and Crab & Shrimp Pie

As I mentioned in my St Ives food article, during my travels I always try to taste as many local products as possible.

So here I decided to order two dishes:

crab cakes

crab and shrimp pie

Together with a bottle of water the total bill came to around £20, which I think was a very fair price considering the location.

To be honest, I had never eaten crab pie before.

But if you have followed my travels in places like New York, Thailand or Spain, you probably know that I enjoy trying local food wherever I travel.

And if you like seafood — crab, mackerel, shrimp or fish — England is actually a fantastic destination.

Returning to Polpeor Cafe, I can say the food was excellent.

Everything tasted fresh and well prepared.

My only regret was that I could not order a beer to go with the meal because I still had to drive afterwards.

I never drink alcohol when I know I have to drive later.

Another thing worth mentioning is the portion size.

The dishes were generous and I definitely felt full after finishing my meal.

Normally I try to eat moderately while traveling, but sometimes I simply decide to enjoy the moment and eat exactly what I want.

In this case it was absolutely worth it.

Final Thoughts About Polpeor Cafe

Good food, generous portions and very reasonable prices.

Add to that the stunning sea views from the terrace and the friendly staff and you clearly have a winner.

Polpeor Cafe turned out to be a great stop during my time exploring Cornwall.

If you visit Lizard Point, this is definitely a good place to enjoy a simple meal made with fresh local seafood while admiring one of the most beautiful coastal views in England.
